The purpose of SPIA is to preserve and enhance the easy living atmosphere and quality of life of the people of Sopchoppy and the surrounding area through fostering economic vitality and opportunity while preserving social, cultural, historic, and natural values.

One of the first projects of the SPIA was the restoration of a log cabin originally built in 1929 by Trammel Green on the occasion of his marriage to Doris Hagan. He was assisted by his cousin, Howard Mathis. They built an identical cabin for him nearby on Emmett Whaley Road.

The wood shingle roof was standard in Wakulla County until the 1930’s when tin roofs first appeared. They were usually made from heart cypress.

The cabin was donated by Emmett Whaley with Betty Green financing the move to the City Park. The Sopchoppy Preservation and Improvement Association is restoring the cabin using funds raised at the Sopchoppy Worm Gruntin’ Festivals in partnership with the City of Sopchoppy.

Future phases of restoration will include adding a porch and stairs on the front, rebuilding the chimney and fireplace, and installing a split-rail fence around the cabin.

The project was started in 2006 and the City of Sopchoppy agreed to pay for the materials if the SPIA covered the labor costs. The project included restoring the foundation and replacing a number of the logs in the walls, reshingling the roof with cedar shakes, adding a front porch and installing a fence.

In 2010 the SPIA commissioned the construction of 14 windows which will be installed sometime in 2011. Future plans are to rebuild the chimney and fireplace and to install a sign describing the cabin's origins and the restoration project.

The SPIA’s primary source of funding is the annual Worm Gruntin’ Festival and to enhance the event built a stage in 2006 that is also loaned to other non-profit events around Wakulla County. In 2010 SPIA provided financial support to the 4th of July celebration and in 2011 bought a brick at the Depot. Other activities include funding the printing of rack cards advertising the downtown merchants and improved the access to water and electricity for vendors at the Worm Gruntin' Festival.
